"Fafner: Heaven and Earth" is the third installment in the "Fafner in the Azure" series, a theatrical anime film set two years after the events of the first TV series, "Fafner in the Azure." It was released in Japan on December 25, 2010. The story takes place in 2148, two years after the end of the war between humans and the mysterious Festum, a war that had brought peace to the world. The protagonist, Kazuki Makabe, lost his friend Sosshi Minashiro in the battle against the Festum, but he still believes Sosshi will return to the island. One day, an unmanned submarine unexpectedly drifts to Tatsumiya Island, and inside is a mysterious boy named Misao Kurusu, who claims to have been sent by Sosshi. His arrival disrupts the island's peace, and the battle between humans and Festum reignites, with the fate of not only humanity but also the Festum at stake. In the film, a new generation of Fafner pilots engage in desperate fights with the Festum, trying to uncover the truth behind the Festum and seeking the possibility of coexistence between humans and Festum. "Fafner: Heaven and Earth" not only continues the science fiction and combat elements of the previous work, but also delves into themes such as war, sacrifice, friendship, and human self-salvation.
