Zakuro

"Otome Youkai Zakuro" (lit. "Maiden Spirit Zakuro") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Lily Hoshino. Set in a Westernized Meiji-era Japan where humans and spirits coexist, the story revolves around the Ministry of Spirit Affairs, formed to maintain harmony between the two. Human representatives, Lieutenants Kei Agemaki, Riken Yoshinokazura, and Ganryu Hanakiri, are paired with half-spirit maidens Zakuro, Susukihotaru, and Bonbori/Hozuki. The series blends romance, comedy, and fantasy, depicting their collaborations and conflicts while solving paranormal cases. Zakuro is a stubborn half-spirit who dislikes humans who readily embrace Western culture, while Kei harbors a severe fear of spirits. As the story progresses, they overcome their prejudices and develop romantic relationships. "Otome Youkai Zakuro" began serialization in the magazine "Comic Birz" in 2006 and was later adapted into an anime produced by J.C.Staff that aired in 2010. It is known for its unique world setting, detailed character designs, and lighthearted yet engaging plot.
