Big Fish & Begonia is a 2016 Chinese animated fantasy film produced by B&T Studio and directed by Liang Xuan and Zhang Chun. Inspired by ancient Chinese classics like the Zhuangzi and Classic of Mountains and Seas, the film also incorporates elements of Chinese mythology, such as the myth of Nuwa patching the sky. It tells the story of a young girl named Chun who seeks to repay a debt by helping the soul of a human boy, Kun, return to life, which leads to a series of disasters. The film is notable for its beautiful visuals, rich Chinese aesthetics, and profound themes. Despite criticisms regarding its plot and character development, its unique visual style and integration of Chinese traditional culture have made it one of the representative works of Chinese animation. Big Fish & Begonia was in production for 12 years, received crowdfunding support, and has been selected for various international film festivals and awards.
