"Hotarubi no Mori e" (Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light) is a Japanese shōjo manga written by Yuki Midorikawa. It was published in the July 2002 issue of LaLa DX magazine and later included in a short story collection of the same name in July 2003. The story revolves around Hotaru Takegawa, a young girl who gets lost in a forest and meets Gin, a mysterious masked spirit. Gin warns Hotaru that he will disappear if touched by a human. Despite this, Hotaru visits Gin every summer, and they develop a unique bond. As Hotaru grows older, she faces the insurmountable challenges of their relationship and their budding romance. In 2011, the anime studio Brain's Base produced an anime film adaptation, directed by Takahiro Omori, with Ayane Sakura and Kōki Uchiyama as voice actors, and music by Makoto Yoshimori. The film is acclaimed for its beauty, simplicity, and tenderness, winning several awards. The story was inspired by Midorikawa's desire to draw scenes such as a boy dodging a falling girl, a shadowy summer forest, and a tranquil summer festival. It is also considered a starting point for Midorikawa's later work, "Natsume's Book of Friends."
