Gyo is a horror manga created by Junji Ito, following the story of Tadashi, a young man, and his girlfriend Kaori's bizarre experience during their vacation in Okinawa. Seemingly normal marine creatures begin sprouting metal legs, accompanied by a putrid, rotting odor known as the “death stench”, and start attacking on land. Kaori, who has a heightened sense of smell, and Tadashi struggle to uncover the origins of this catastrophe. The story delves into the biological experiments conducted by the Japanese army during World War II, which led to the creation of a pathogen that drives these walking machines. The manga also incorporates bonus stories titled 'The Enigma of Amigara Fault' and 'The Sad Tale of the Principal Post'. Later, an anime OVA adaptation titled 'Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack!' by ufotable was released in 2012. While primarily based on the manga, the animation alters some character settings and focuses, featuring Kaori more prominently as the main character rather than Tadashi.
Gyo is notable for its unique horror elements, Junji Ito’s signature gory art style, and its metaphors for society and war. Both the manga and anime provide a deep exploration of the darker sides of humanity and technology.
