Black★Rock Shooter (Japanese: ブラック★ロックシューター) is a Japanese media franchise based on an original character created by the illustrator huke. The franchise includes music, anime, manga, and video games. The character originated as an illustration posted by huke on his blog and Pixiv in December 2007. Inspired by the illustration, musician ryo (of Supercell) created a song of the same name featuring the Vocaloid Hatsune Miku, which was released on Nico Nico Douga in June 2008 and quickly gained popularity. This song and the character's design spurred the development of subsequent anime and video game adaptations.
The 2012 TV anime series, also titled *Black★Rock Shooter*, was produced by Ordet and Sanzigen. The series focuses on Mato Kuroi, a schoolgirl in the real world, and the battles of Black★Rock Shooter in an alternate world. While it deviates from the previous OVA and original concept in terms of plot, the core themes remain consistent: the intertwining of inner emotional struggles with otherworldly combat. The opening theme song was the original "Black Rock Shooter" performed by Hatsune Miku. The anime explores themes of friendship, loneliness, and self-discovery and has garnered a large fanbase across platforms. Additionally, the series has led to several manga adaptations, including *Black Rock Shooter: Innocent Soul* and a PSP video game titled *Black Rock Shooter: The Game*, and most recently a new TV anime series *Black Rock Shooter DAWN FALL* in 2022.
The story of Black Rock Shooter has continued to evolve in various forms, but the signature look of black hair, a blue flame eye, and a powerful cannon has remained its defining characteristics. More than just a character, it is a story universe that spans diverse media, continuing to attract new audiences.
