Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods is the eighteenth theatrical anime film in the Dragon Ball franchise, and the fourteenth under the Dragon Ball Z banner. Released in Japan on March 30, 2013, it marked the first theatrical Dragon Ball film in 17 years since 1996's Dragon Ball: The Path to Power. Set a few years after the defeat of Majin Buu, the film follows Beerus, the God of Destruction, as he seeks out the Super Saiyan God, leading him to Earth and a confrontation with Goku and his friends. Beerus, guided by a prophetic dream, awakens from his slumber to challenge this legendary warrior. Meanwhile, Goku is training on King Kai's planet when Beerus and his attendant, Whis, arrive. After effortlessly defeating Goku, Beerus heads to Earth, where he encounters Bulma's birthday party. To face Beerus, Goku achieves the Super Saiyan God transformation with the aid of his friends. Despite gaining this new power, Goku is still unable to defeat Beerus. Ultimately, Beerus acknowledges Goku's strength and spares the Earth, hinting at even greater threats within the universe. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods revived the franchise and laid the groundwork for the subsequent Dragon Ball Super anime series.
