"The Tale of the Princess Kaguya" (かぐや姫の物語) is a 2013 Japanese animated film produced by Studio Ghibli, directed and co-written by Isao Takahata. Based on the Japanese folktale "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," it tells the story of Princess Kaguya, who is discovered as a tiny baby inside a bamboo stalk and raised by an old bamboo cutter and his wife. As she grows into a beautiful young woman, many suitors seek her hand, but Kaguya refuses them all. The film reveals her true origins on the moon and her longing for life on Earth, eventually leading to a bittersweet departure. It is known for its distinctive watercolor-inspired animation style and its themes of societal expectations, freedom, and the ephemeral nature of life. Takahata explores conflicts between tradition and modernity, nature and city, as well as profound human and social issues within the film.
