Valvrave the Liberator (Japanese: 革命機ヴァルヴレイヴ, Hepburn: Kakumeiki Varuvureivu) is a Japanese mecha anime series produced by Sunrise. It is directed by Kō Matsuo and written by Ichirō Ōkouchi. The series is set in a futuristic world where 70% of humanity resides in space, divided among the Dorssia Military Pact Federation, the Atlantic Ring United States (ARUS), and the neutral nation of JIOR. The story follows Haruto Tokishima, a 17-year-old high school student from JIOR, who accidentally pilots a mysterious mecha called Valvrave during a Dorssian invasion. As a consequence, Haruto becomes an immortal who must feed on others to survive. To protect his friends and school, he allies with L-elf Karlstein, a Dorssian agent, to fight against the two major powers and uncover the secrets of Valvrave. The anime aired for two seasons of 12 episodes each. It received generally positive reviews for its blend of mecha and supernatural elements but also faced criticism for its complex plot and some controversial content. The series has also spawned manga, light novel, and other media adaptations.
