Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku -Outbreak- (ひぐらしのなく頃に拡～アウトブレイク～, When the Cicadas Cry Expanded -Outbreak-) is the third OVA project for the Higurashi When They Cry series. It adapts the short story "Outbreak" included in the Higurashi Daybreak soundtrack. The story unfolds in June 1983, when Hinamizawa village is quarantined by the Japanese Self-Defense Force due to an unknown virus outbreak. Main characters Keiichi Maebara, Rena Ryuuguu, and Mion Sonozaki meet up to collect supplies. However, they soon realize the situation is more complex than a simple outbreak. Villagers attribute the events to curses and deities, while the mysterious "Alphabet Project," whose research caused the virus leak, emerges. Meanwhile, Rika Furude is taken away, and Satoko Houjou is targeted as a sacrifice due to the villagers' superstitions. Keiichi, Rena, and Mion find themselves embroiled in a conflict for survival and to save their friends, confronting the virus, conspiracies, and the darkness of human nature. This OVA presents a different ending from the original story, further exploring the horror and despair in the Higurashi world.
