Harlock: Space Pirate

Space Pirate Captain Harlock is a Japanese manga series created by Leiji Matsumoto. Set in the future, humanity has achieved a vast starfaring civilization but is succumbing to apathy and despair, often due to subjugation by foreign invaders. Harlock is a rebellious space pirate who leads his crew aboard the starship Arcadia on daring raids against Earth's oppressors. The main antagonists are the Mazone, a race of plant-based alien women who explored Earth in the mythic past and are now back to reclaim it. Harlock is an archetypal romantic hero with an individualist philosophy, known for his courage, stoicism, and rebellion against totalitarian regimes. His crew includes the enigmatic Miime, the young scientist Daiba, the navigator Yuki, the humorous Yattaran, and Doctor Zero. The series is renowned for its profound themes, complex characters, and unique art style, holding a significant place in the anime and manga world. The anime series first aired in 1978, directed by Rintaro and produced by Toei Animation. A computer-animated film was also released in 2013, bringing Harlock's adventures to a new audience.
