Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East (2013) is a Japanese television anime series adapted from Kyokutei Bakin's epic Edo-era novel, Nansō Satomi Hakkenden. The story revolves around eight warriors with peony-shaped birthmarks, including Shino Inuzuka and Sosuke Inukawa, who possess mysterious powers. They are drawn together by fate to fight against an evil force threatening the world. The anime comprises two seasons, each with 13 episodes, and is known for its beautiful visuals, dramatic storyline, and thrilling battle scenes. The plot begins with a devastated village, where only Shino, Sosuke, and Hamaji survive, and they subsequently encounter other warriors with the same birthmarks. They are tasked by the Church to find eight mystical gems and their owners, or face a fate worse than death. The anime re-examines concepts like feudal loyalty through a modern lens, blending fantasy, adventure, and action. The series has spawned related manga, games, and other derivatives, gaining a significant impact in the ACG community.
