Brynhildr in the Darkness (Japanese: 極黒のブリュンヒルデ, Hepburn: Gokukoku no Buryunhirude) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Lynn Okamoto. It was serialized in Shueisha's seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump from January 2012 to March 2016. The story follows Ryota Murakami, a high school student haunted by the death of his childhood friend Kuroneko, who was obsessed with proving the existence of aliens. One day, a transfer student named Neko Kuroha appears, who not only looks like Kuroneko but also possesses superhuman strength and claims to be a witch. Ryota discovers that Neko is an escapee from a research lab that conducts human experiments and joins her and other escaped witches in their fight against the lab. An anime adaptation by Arms aired in 2014. The anime received mostly negative reviews for its shoddy story, unmemorable characters and overuse of harem antics, although it received some praise for its fanservice and faithfulness to the manga. The series blends elements of magic, science fiction, and dark fantasy, exploring themes of life, friendship and rebellion.
