Bayonetta: Bloody Fate is a 2013 Japanese anime film produced by GONZO, based on PlatinumGames' 2009 video game, Bayonetta. The film was directed by Fuminori Kizaki and written by Mitsutaka Hirota. It was released in Japanese theaters on November 23, 2013, and later on DVD and Blu-ray on February 14, 2014. Funimation licensed the film in North America. The film is an adaptation, not a direct translation, of the game's story, featuring changes to locations, order of events, and details. Bayonetta, the protagonist, awakens after 500 years of slumber at the bottom of a lake, having lost her memories. She embarks on a journey to rediscover her identity and past. She battles angelic monsters and ultimately confronts Balder, the last Lumen Sage, in the European town of Vigrid. This film is notable for being the first Bayonetta product to feature a Japanese voice cast, which was positively received, leading the cast to reprise their roles in Bayonetta 2 and the Wii U version of the original game. However, the events of Bloody Fate are considered non-canon due to the different direction of Bayonetta 2's storyline.
