Rail Wars! (also known as RAIL WARS! -Japanese National Railways Security Force) is a Japanese light novel series written by Takumi Toyoda and illustrated by Vania 600. The story takes place in an alternate version of Japan where the national railway system was never privatized. The protagonist, Naoto Takayama, aspires to a comfortable life working for the Japanese National Railways but ends up as a trainee in the Railways Security Force. There, he must navigate his quirky colleagues while dealing with an extremist group called "RJ" seeking to privatize the railways. Originally published by Sohgeisha, the series later moved to Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha, totaling 20 volumes. The series has also been adapted into manga and anime. The Rail Wars! anime aired from July to September 2014, produced by Passione, with theme songs “Mukai Kaze ni Utarenagara” by Minori Chihara and “OVERDRIVER” by ZAQ. It blends comedy, action, and some fan service, but was criticized for its unexciting fantasy setting and cheap fan service.
In addition to the light novels, there is also a manga adaptation titled "Rail Wars! Nihon Kokuyū Tetsudō Kōantai The Revolver," illustrated by Keiji Asakawa. A PlayStation Vita adventure game developed by 5pb. was also planned, but was ultimately canceled due to development delays and other issues. While the original light novel series is complete, its world continues to expand with new light novel series and side stories.
