McDull: Me & My Mum is a 2014 Chinese-Hong Kong animated family comedy film directed by Brian Tse and Li Junmin. The film opens with an experienced detective who is constantly worried about being overshadowed by the brilliant detective Bobby Mak. Under pressure, he seeks Bobby's help to solve a case. After a brief examination, Bobby declares that the case will resolve itself within an hour. To pass the time, Bobby tells the gathered detectives and suspects (a group of children who are fans of Bobby) his origin story. As a child, Bobby was known as McDull and lived with his mother, Madame Mak, in a small town. McDull, although not very bright, always received love from his mother. Once, when Madame Mak had to 'go to space,' McDull stayed with his uncle and experienced how simple noodles could evoke different feelings. Later, Madame Mak hosted a TV show where McDull picked lottery numbers, but they never won. Following McDull's advice, she bought other numbers and seemed to win a fortune, yet she still worked hard. As McDull grew up, he tried many jobs and eventually became a fisherman, drifting apart from his mother. Upon learning that his mother was about to 'go to space,' McDull returned home, but it was too late. After traveling the world, he finally understood his mother's lessons and became a brilliant detective. At the end of the story, Bobby's tale touches the detective's son, leading to reconciliation between father and son. Through the story of McDull and his mother, the film explores the meaning of family and life, with a nostalgic and warm tone.
