Himouto! Umaru-chan (Japanese: 干物妹!うまるちゃん) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Sankakuhead. The story revolves around Umaru Doma, a high school girl who is perfect and admired at school, but at home, she transforms into a lazy, gaming, and snack-loving 'himouto' (dried-fish sister). She lives with her older brother, Taihei Doma, who is often exasperated by her behavior at home. The manga began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump in 2013 and has been adapted into anime and video games. Besides the main manga, there are spin-offs such as Akita Imokko! Ebina-chan focusing on Nana Ebina, and Himouto! Umaru-chan S. The anime adaptation is produced by Doga Kobo and has two seasons. The series is popular for its lighthearted humor and portrayal of otaku culture. It explores the relationship between siblings and the behavioral differences of teenagers in different settings. Umaru's 'indoor' and 'outdoor' modes form a distinct contrast, allowing viewers to laugh and also see her genuine side. The anime's theme songs and voice acting have also been well-received, making it a representative work of otaku culture.
