"An English Family Eats New Year's" (英国一家、正月を食べる) is a special episode of the anime series "An English Family Eats Japan" (英国一家、日本を食べる), which aired on NHK General TV on January 1, 2016. The special focuses on the theme of “New Year’s cuisine,” depicting the experiences of the British food writer Michael Booth and his family as they celebrate the New Year in Japan. After completing a 100-day culinary journey through Japan, Michael returns to London and publishes a book about Japanese food. During a speech, he is questioned by a master of Japanese cuisine regarding his understanding of “Osechi Ryori” (traditional Japanese New Year’s food). To rectify his lack of knowledge, Michael decides to personally experience Japan's New Year culture and cuisine, bringing his family along. The special includes not only animation but also live-action segments, where the “real Michael” guides the audience through the essence of Japanese New Year dishes, such as “Osechi,” “Mochi,” and “Toso.” This special is both an introduction to Japanese New Year culture and a continuation of the "An English Family Eats Japan" series.
