Pigtails

"Mitsuami no Kamisama" (English title: Pigtails) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Machiko Kyō. It was serialized in Shueisha's seinen manga magazine Jump X from August 2011 to May 2013, with a single tankōbon volume released in July 2013. The story revolves around a pigtail-braided girl living alone in a seaside house after a disaster, and the sentient objects surrounding her. Production I.G. adapted the manga into a 28-minute anime film, which premiered in Japan in October 2015 and was internationally released as "Pigtails." The film has garnered multiple awards, including the 2016 California Film Awards' Diamond Award for animation and the 2017 North American Film Awards' Special Jury Award. The manga itself also won the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize's New Artist Prize in 2014. The anime film uses a unique perspective to portray the unspeakable feelings of the Japanese people in the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami and Fukushima disaster.
