"The Cowboy's Flute" (Chinese: 牧笛, Mu Di) is a Chinese animated short film produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1963, directed by Te Wei and Qian Jiajun, with Te Wei also serving as the screenwriter. It is the second ink-wash animation film in the world after "Little Tadpoles Look for Their Mother." The film follows a young cowherd who falls asleep while tending his buffalo and dreams that the animal has wandered off. He searches for it, playing his flute, eventually leading the buffalo back to him. The film has no dialogue and the animation draws inspiration from Chinese ink-wash painting, featuring fluid lines and blurred ink effects to portray the beautiful scenery of southern China. The soundtrack features a flute solo throughout the film, creating a poetic atmosphere. The film won the Golden Prize at the Odense International Film Festival in Denmark in 1963 and is considered a classic of Chinese animation. The film's success highlighted the innovation and achievements of Chinese animation in the ink-wash animation style.
