Tsugumomo (Japanese: つぐもも) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yoshikazu Hamada, which began in 2007. The story revolves around Kazuya Kagami, an ordinary boy whose life is turned upside down when his late mother's obi transforms into a kimono-clad girl named Kiriha. Kiriha is a “tsugumomo,” an object that has gained a soul through long years of harmony with its owners. Kazuya has no recollection of meeting Kiriha when she exclaims “Long time no see” to him. He nearly loses his life from an attacking “amasogi,” premature spirits born only to fulfill impure wishes of certain people, and Kiriha defends him. With Kiriha’s arrival, Kazuya enters a reality with gods and other tsukumogami and slowly discovers his dark past. Tsugumomo has also been adapted into an anime, with the first season airing in 2017 and a second season airing in 2020. The series explores themes of human emotions, cause and effect, and the deep connections that can exist with traditional objects.
