Sekai no Yami Zukan (The World YAMIZUKAN) is a Japanese short-form horror anime series that aired in 2017. Produced by ILCA and Nazotokine Limited, it is known for its unique Showa-era retro paper-theater style and bizarre storylines. The anime uses an omnibus format, with each episode telling a standalone story about various supernatural phenomena and urban legends, including UFOs, cryptids, curses, ancient civilizations, supernatural powers, spiritual experiences, strange cases, different dimensions, and urban legends. The stories unfold around a mysterious encyclopedia found within a dilapidated building, revealing a hidden darkness through a series of chilling experiences.
Each episode presents surreal and macabre experiences that often end in disturbing ways. Examples include a man searching for his adulterous wife only to find himself at the mercy of otherworldly visitors, a boy befriending a snowman harboring a sinister secret, crop circles suddenly appearing on a family farm created by unexpected guests, and menacing mechanical beings continuing undetected in plain sight. The stories, while seemingly simple, conceal deeper layers of terror best left undisturbed. 'The World Yamizukan' offers a distinct horror experience through its unique style and unsettling narratives.
