Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045

Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 is a Japanese original net animation (ONA) anime series based on the Ghost in the Shell manga series by Masamune Shirow, set in the Stand Alone Complex sub-continuity. Co-directed by Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki, and produced by Production I.G and SOLA DIGITAL ARTS, it marks the series' first foray into full 3DCG animation. Set in the year 2045, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 depicts a world where a global economic disaster, known as the "Synchronized Global Default," has plunged nations into a state of endless “Sustainable War.” Former members of Public Security Section 9, including Motoko Kusanagi and Batou, are employed as mercenaries, using their cyberbrains and combat skills to defuse conflicts around the world. However, the emergence of “Post-Humans” and a conspiracy uncovered by former Chief Aramaki forces Section 9 to reunite. The first season premiered on Netflix worldwide on April 23, 2020, to generally negative reviews, with a second season released on May 23, 2022. Additionally, the first season was adapted into a compilation film titled 'Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 Sustainable War', released in 2021, and a second compilation movie was released in 2023 named 'Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 The Last Human'. The series has faced criticism for its 3DCG animation and narrative direction, being regarded by many as one of the weaker entries in the franchise.
