"Mirai" (Japanese: 未来のミライ) is a 2018 Japanese animated film written and directed by Mamoru Hosoda and produced by Studio Chizu. The story follows a four-year-old boy named Kun who, feeling neglected after the birth of his younger sister Mirai, embarks on a fantastical journey through time, encountering his sister from the future and learning about family and love. The film explores themes of family relationships, growing up, and self-discovery through its delicate emotional portrayal and fantastical elements. It was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Film awards at both the 76th Golden Globe Awards and the 91st Academy Awards, and won the Best Animated Feature — Independent award at the 46th Annie Awards. It is the first non-Ghibli anime film to receive an Academy Award nomination in the category. While praised for its nuanced depiction of family dynamics and child psychology, it also sparked some controversy in Japan regarding its character portrayals.
