Vinland Saga (ヴィンランド・サガ, Vinrando Saga) is a Japanese historical manga series written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura. The series is set in a historical depiction of Europe during the Viking Age, and it primarily follows the story of Thorfinn as he seeks revenge for his father’s death by joining Askeladd's mercenary band and develops throughout his journey. Initially serialized in Kodansha's youth-targeted Weekly Shōnen Magazine, it later moved to the monthly manga magazine Afternoon. As of June 2024, the series has been collected into 28 tankōbon volumes and is licensed in English by Kodansha Comics USA. Vinland Saga is acclaimed for its detailed historical setting, profound character development, and its exploration of themes such as revenge, pacifism, and the meaning of true strength. The storyline is divided into four main arcs: the War Arc, the Slave Arc, the Eastern Expedition Arc, and the Vinland Arc. It not only depicts the violence and conflicts of the Viking Age but also delves into the complexities of human nature and the possibility of peace. Additionally, it has been adapted into a two-season anime television series, the first season by Wit Studio and the second by MAPPA, both of which have received critical acclaim.
