Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution is a CGI-animated remake of the 1998 anime film Pokémon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back, and the third and final film in the Pokémon Sun & Moon: The Series film trilogy. The film follows the story of scientists who discover and exploit a fossil of the Mythical Pokémon Mew, unleashing Mewtwo, a Legendary Pokémon created to be a tool of destruction. As Mewtwo becomes aware of its dubious origins, it begins to resent its human creators and seeks revenge. Ash Ketchum, Pikachu, and their friends find themselves at the center of its rampage, tasked with overcoming Mewtwo's challenge and helping it find a new meaning for its life. Released in Japan in July 2019 and worldwide on Netflix in February 2020, it is the first fully CGI-animated Pokémon movie. While largely faithful to the original, it employs new 3D animation technology and adds minor new scenes and plot elements, like Mewtwo's early interactions with other clones. The film received mixed reviews upon release, with some critics panning its 3D animation while others praised its faithful recreation of the original film.
