Aerial displays, also known as floating displays or air displays, are a type of display technology that projects images directly into the air. They are mainly divided into two types: mediated and unmediated. Mediated aerial displays rely on mediums such as water mist or dust, projecting light onto these mediums to create floating images. Unmediated aerial displays, on the other hand, use technology to form images directly in the air, such as laser-induced air breakdown, which creates light points by focusing lasers to ionize the air and then scanning to form images, or by using the principle of light field integration, which uses multiple refraction and reflection units to make light converge in space and form a floating image. The advantage of aerial displays is that people can interact directly with images in space without the need for auxiliary devices like VR. Although the technology is still under development, such as the large size, single color, and high cost of laser-induced air breakdown imaging, and the unstable images of water mist/dust projection, the clarity, resolution, and display effects of aerial displays have been significantly improved with the emergence of new technologies such as compressive light field display and suspended light field display, leading to broad application prospects. In addition, some companies like ASKA3D are also trying to achieve aerial imaging through AI boards, but the cost is high due to the complex manufacturing process.
