The series premiered on July 8, 2020, on Fuji TV's +Ultra anime programming block. It received an early release on Netflix in Japan on June 2, 2020. The series' story is divided into arcs called "cases." The first case, "Los Angeles Connection," was released on Netflix Japan in June 2020, followed by the worldwide release of the first three cases (Los Angeles Connection, Singapore Sky, and Snow of London) on Netflix on August 20, 2020. The fourth case, "Wizard of Far East," was released in November. The anime follows Makoto Edamura, a self-proclaimed "greatest swindler in Japan," who gets tricked while trying to con a French tourist in Asakusa. This Frenchman, named Laurent Thierry, turns out to be a much higher-level "confidence man" in control of the mafia. Edamura finds himself entangled in Laurent's dirty jobs, and the series follows his fate. The anime is praised for its engaging storylines, vibrant characters, and fluid animation. The show also includes a sequel titled "Great Pretender: Razbliuto," which premiered in February 2024.
