"The Case Files of Jeweler Richard" (Japanese: 宝石商リチャード氏の謎鑑定, Hōsekisho Richard-shi no Nazo Kantei) is a Japanese mystery light novel series written by Nanako Tsujimura and illustrated by Utako Yukihiro. Published by Shueisha under their Shueisha Orange Bunko imprint since 2015, it consists of 11 main volumes and 2 short story collections. A manga adaptation with art by Mika Akatsuki has been serialized in Ichijinsha's Monthly Comic Zero Sum magazine since November 28, 2019. An anime television series adaptation by Shuka aired from January 9 to March 26, 2020. The story follows Seigi Nakata, a university student with a strong sense of justice, who rescues Richard Ranasinghe de Vulpian, a handsome British jeweler, from drunkards one night. When Seigi learns of Richard's profession, he asks him to appraise a ring inherited from his grandmother. This encounter leads them to solve various jewel-related cases, uncovering the psychological aspects of the owners that lie within the gems. The series is known for its blend of mystery, drama, and slice-of-life elements. The novel series is divided into three main arcs, each marked by time skips and different narrative styles. The first arc spans the first six volumes, told primarily from Seigi's first-person perspective, with each volume divided into gem-themed cases. The second arc (volumes 7-10) adds prologues from Richard's perspective and expands into more complete stories. The third arc (volume 11 onwards) shifts to a third-person narrative and case titles are character-based. The anime adaptation is produced by Shuka, directed by Tarou Iwasaki, and features Takahiro Sakurai and Yuma Uchida as the voice actors for Richard and Seigi respectively. The opening theme is “Hōseki no Umareru Toki” by Nagi Yanagi, and the ending theme is “Only for you” by Da-iCE.
