Ikebukuro West Gate Park (often referred to as IWGP) is an urban mystery novel series created by Ira Ishida. The series is known for its depiction of fringe groups in modern Japanese society and has been adapted into multiple media formats. The story revolves around 20-year-old Makoto, who lives near Ikebukuro West Gate Park and frequently gets involved in dangerous situations. Despite not wanting to join a gang, Makoto becomes a key figure for the local gang, the G-Boys, due to his calm demeanor and ability to resolve problems, helping to defuse tense situations. The series explores social issues such as gang warfare, juvenile delinquency, drug abuse, prostitution, and murder. First released as a novel series in 1998, with a total of 6 volumes, Ikebukuro West Gate Park was later adapted into a highly successful television drama directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, which aired in 2000, and which also led to a manga adaptation. In 2020, an anime series produced by Doga Kobo was broadcast. These adaptations generally follow the storylines of the novels, but each has their own emphasis. The series has been well-received for its vivid portrayal of marginalized people in contemporary Japanese society and its engaging storylines.
