Zheng Chenggong (August 27, 1624 – June 23, 1662), also known as Koxinga, was a prominent Ming Dynasty loyalist and military leader during the late Ming and early Qing periods. Born in Hirado, Japan, his father was the merchant Zheng Zhilong and his mother was Japanese, Tagawa. Zheng Chenggong returned to China in his youth, receiving a traditional education and later engaging in political and military activities with his father. After the fall of the Ming Dynasty, he refused to surrender to the Qing and instead supported the Southern Ming regime. He was granted the name 'Chenggong' ('Success') and the title 'Koxinga' ('Lord of the Imperial Surname'). Using Xiamen and Kinmen as his base, Zheng Chenggong actively resisted the Qing forces and launched several attacks on coastal areas. In 1661, he led his army to reclaim Taiwan from Dutch colonial rule, ending the Dutch occupation and contributing significantly to the development of Taiwan. Though he died young, his spirit of resistance against foreign invaders and reclamation of lost territory is admired and remembered by later generations.
