The House of the Lost on the Cape (Japanese: 岬のマヨイガ, Hepburn: Misaki no Mayoiga) is a Japanese novel written by Sachiko Kashiwaba. It was initially serialized in the Iwate Nippo daily newspaper from May 10, 2014, to July 4, 2015. Kodansha later published the novel in print on September 11, 2015. The story follows Yui, a 17-year-old runaway, and Hiyori, an 8-year-old girl who lost her family, who meet a mysterious old woman named Kiwa at a shelter. Together, they move into an old house by the sea called "Mayoiga," a place said to shelter lost travelers. In this house, the three damaged hearts gradually find comfort. As time passes, strange beings that Kiwa calls "Fushigitto" begin to appear around the house. The novel won the 54th Noma Children's Literature Award in 2016. An anime film adaptation by David Production was released in 2021 as part of the "Zutto Ōen Project 2011 + 10..." to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The film received the Best Animation Film Award at the Mainichi Film Festival in 2022. The English translation was published by Restless Books in 2023 and won a Mildred L. Batchelder Award honor in 2024.
