I'm Standing on a Million Lives (Japanese: 100万の命の上に俺は立っている, Hyakuman no Inochi no Ue ni Ore wa Tatteiru) is a Japanese manga series written by Naoki Yamakawa and illustrated by Akinari Nao. It has been serialized in Kodansha's shōnen manga magazine Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine since June 2016. The manga is licensed in North America by Kodansha USA. An anime television series adaptation produced by Maho Film aired from October to December 2020, with a second season airing from July to September 2021. The story follows Yusuke Yotsuya, a detached ninth-grader, and his classmates Iu Shindo and Kusue Hakozaki, who are transported to a fantasy world by a mysterious half-faced creature. They are tasked with completing quests given by the creature in order to return to their world. They possess a form of immortality that allows them to respawn if at least one party member survives. Later, Yuka, Torii, and Glenda join their group. They travel through multiple parallel worlds, completing quests, and each time they return to the real world, several years have passed. The mysterious creature answers their questions after each completed mission. Yusuke Yotsuya is a highly rational individual who prioritizes completing the mission at any cost. He keeps an ordered ranking of the people around him based on survival priority and will do whatever it takes to complete the objectives. He does not see his life as having the same value as others and views himself as expendable. However, he still pays respect or mourns those who must be sacrificed.
