Joran: The Princess of Snow and Blood

Joran: The Princess of Snow and Blood (擾乱 THE PRINCESS OF SNOW AND BLOOD) is an original Japanese anime television series animated by Tatsunoko Production under their Bakken Record label and produced by Bushiroad. The series is based on the 1973 film Lady Snowblood, which itself is an adaptation of the manga series of the same name by Kazuo Koike and Kazuo Kamimura. It aired from April to June 2021. The story is set in an alternate historical Japan in the 64th year of the Meiji era (1931 A.D.), where the Tokugawa Shogunate remains in power. The nation has discovered a unique energy source called the "Dragon Vein", which has allowed Japan to dramatically advance its technology while retaining Edo-era aesthetics. However, the government is threatened by an insurgent group called "Kuchinawa" who seek to overthrow the Shogunate. In response, the government creates a secret police organization called "Nue." The protagonist, Sawa Yukimura, becomes an assassin for Nue after her family is murdered by Kuchinawa, and seeks revenge on those responsible. The anime blends action, drama, fantasy, and historical elements, and is notable for its unique setting and themes of revenge.
