"Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut" (Tsuki to Laika to Nosferatu) is a Japanese science fantasy light novel series written by Keisuke Makino and illustrated by Karei. The story is set after World War II, where two superpowers divide the world: the Federal Republic of Zirnitra (based on the Soviet Union) in the East and the United Kingdom of Arnack (based on the United States) in the West. A fierce space race ensues between them. Zirnitra launches the secret 'Nosferatu Project', using vampire Irina Luminesk as a test subject for the first human spaceflight. Lev Leps, a former cosmonaut candidate, is assigned as her handler and trainer. Despite being initially treated as a test subject, Lev and Irina bond over their shared love of space. The series has light novel, manga, and anime adaptations. The anime, produced by Arvo Animation, aired from October to December 2021 and won the 53rd Seiun Award for Best Japanese Long Story in 2022.
