New Gods: Nezha Reborn

New Gods: Nezha Reborn is a 2021 Chinese 3D animated fantasy action film directed by Zhao Ji and written by Mu Chuan. The film is based on the character Nezha from the Ming dynasty novel Investiture of the Gods, reimagining the story with a steampunk and cyberpunk aesthetic. Set in the fictional city of Donghai, loosely based on 1920s Shanghai, the film follows Li Yunxiang, a motorcycle rider who is the reincarnation of Nezha, as he must settle a 3,000-year-old grudge with the Dragon Clan. The film was released in mainland China on February 12, 2021, and Netflix acquired global rights outside of China, releasing it on their platform on April 12, 2021. New Gods: Nezha Reborn is not a sequel to the 2019 film Ne Zha, though both are inspired by Investiture of the Gods. The movie has received several domestic animation awards and was followed by a prequel, New Gods: Yang Jian, in 2022. It has garnered significant attention for its unique visual style and innovative take on the classic tale.
