"The Tale of the Heike" is a classic Japanese epic literature set against the backdrop of the Genpei War in the late 12th century. It narrates the rise and fall of the Taira clan, also known as the Heike. The story begins with Taira no Kiyomori's rise to power, depicting how the Heike reached their peak of influence, only to fall due to their arrogance and complacency. The narrative incorporates numerous battle scenes and explores themes such as samurai ethics and Buddhist concepts of karma. Originally transmitted orally by biwa-playing monks, the text was later compiled in writing, with numerous versions existing, the most popular being the one compiled by the blind monk Kakuichi. "The Tale of the Heike" holds a significant position in Japanese literary history and has inspired numerous artistic works, including Noh plays, Kabuki performances, and ukiyo-e prints. In 2021, an animated series produced by Science SARU, also named "The Heike Story," was adapted from this epic, offering a modern interpretation of the classic tale.
