Drifting Home (Japanese: 雨を告げる漂流団地, Ame o Tsugeru Hyōryū Danchi) is a 2022 Japanese animated fantasy adventure comedy-drama film co-written and directed by Hiroyasu Ishida. Produced by Studio Colorido, the film was released simultaneously in Japanese theaters and on Netflix on September 16, 2022.
The story follows Kosuke Kumagaya and Natsume Touchi, childhood friends who grew up like siblings. Their relationship begins to strain after the death of Kosuke's grandfather, Yasuji. One summer vacation day, Kosuke and his classmates sneak into a “ghost housing complex” slated for demolition, a place filled with memories for Kosuke and Natsume. There, Kosuke unexpectedly encounters Natsume and learns of a mysterious boy named Noppo living in the complex. After an argument, heavy rain falls, and when it stops, the entire housing complex is drifting in the middle of the ocean.
The film depicts Kosuke, Natsume, and their friends' efforts to survive in the drifting apartment complex. They experience fights, tears, and perhaps eventual reconciliation. It explores themes of friendship, growing up, and dealing with loss. The music is composed by Umitarō Abe, and the theme song is "Kieteshimai Sō Desu" (It Seems I'm Fading Away) by Zutomayo, with the insert song "Natsugare" (Summer Slump).
