The Gene of AI (Japanese: AI no Idenshi) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kyūri Yamada. It was serialized in Akita Shoten's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Champion from November 2015 to August 2017, with its chapters collected into eight tankōbon volumes. The story is set in the near future where humanoids (also known as AI), machines with advanced functions and artificial intelligence resembling human personalities, are a part of society. The story revolves around Dr. Hikaru Sudou, a physician specializing in treating the unique ailments of humanoids. By day, he runs a clinic, and by night, he operates under the moniker “Moggadeet”, performing illegal procedures and searching for information about his missing mother. Sudou encounters patients with various problems, including identity crises, performance limitations, and emotional issues, prompting audiences to reflect on ethical and social issues surrounding human and AI coexistence. The work explores the impact of technological progress on the relationship between humans and humanoids and the true meaning of defining “human” and “humanoid” in an evolving world. The series also includes two sequel manga, AI no Idenshi: Red Queen and AI no Idenshi: Blue Age, and a television anime series adaptation produced by Madhouse, which aired in 2023.
