"The Apothecary Diaries" (Japanese: 薬屋のひとりごと, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) is a Japanese light novel series written by Natsu Hyūga. The story is set in a fictional empire resembling Imperial China during the Tang dynasty. The protagonist, Maomao, is a daughter of an apothecary who is kidnapped and sold into servitude in the inner palace. Maomao hides her extensive knowledge of medicine, intending to live out her two years of service quietly. However, when the Emperor's infants and concubines start falling ill, she begins to investigate the cause. Using her experience as an apothecary, she successfully solves the mystery, which draws the attention of Jinshi, an influential eunuch. Maomao is then promoted to lady-in-waiting for the Emperor’s favorite concubine, Gyokuyou, and begins solving various mysteries within the court. The series is praised for its unique characters, engaging plot, and clever use of ancient medical knowledge. The series has been adapted into manga and a TV anime, both receiving critical acclaim and a large fan base. Originally serialized on the novel posting site "Shōsetsuka ni Narō," it was then published as a single novel by Shufunotomo, and then republished as a light novel in 2014.
