"Journey to the West: The Annual Series" is a fantasy historical Chinese animation produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures, directed by Mai Zhengle and Xu Yu. It is adapted from the namesake Hong Kong comic by Zheng Jianhe and Deng Zhihui, telling the subversive legendary story of the journey to the west after sixteen years when the Tang Sanzang and his disciples handed the scriptures to the Heavenly Court. The wolf demon Bai Lang sets out to find the four masters and disciples again to embark on the journey of returning the scriptures. The story begins with the battle of Tianyu Mountain, unfolding the respective experiences of the Westbound team after their separation. Sha Wujing goes to the underworld to rescue his master, Zhu Bajie commits a mistake in Blackwater Town, and Bai Lang Xiaoyu tames a tiger on his journey and encounters the siege of stone soldiers in the ancient city. Tang Sanzang opens a restaurant on the Monster Road and resolves the grievances of the dead souls. As of January 2025, the annual series has been updated to 45 episodes, with a planned total of 52 episodes, but has been suspended several times and interspersed with the spin-off "King of the Wild". "Journey to the West: The Annual Series" retains the essence of the original manga in terms of plot, and innovates in animation production and character shaping. The plot of the show is full of ups and downs, and the characters have complex relationships, making it a highly anticipated domestic animation masterpiece.
