A block of emerald is a decorative block in Minecraft, crafted by combining nine emeralds at a crafting table. It's primarily used for storing emeralds, allowing nine emeralds to be stored in a single block, and can be broken down to retrieve the emeralds at any time. Additionally, the block serves as a decorative building material. It can also be used to power beacons, where a base of emerald blocks at the bottom of the beacon provides its power. A 3x3 base is required, with additional layers of 5x5, 7x7, and 9x9 emerald blocks increasing the beacon's effects. Importantly, the base doesn't have to be fully emerald blocks, but can include iron, gold, netherite, and diamond blocks as well. An iron pickaxe or higher is needed to mine it, otherwise, the block will not drop anything. It was first introduced in snapshot 12w22a, added to the game following popular demand after emeralds were implemented. The block's internal name is emerald_block.
