Cactus is a common plant block in Minecraft, naturally generating in desert and badlands biomes. They cause damage to entities upon contact and can destroy items that touch them. Cacti can be mined by hand without affecting mining speed. When a cactus is placed in an unsuitable spot, such as when a solid block is placed next to it or its supporting block is removed, it uproots and drops as an item. Cacti can only be placed on sand, red sand, suspicious sand, or another cactus block. Cacti can grow up to three blocks tall and grow upward when the top cactus block receives random ticks. They can be smelted in a furnace to obtain green dye, or used in composting or camel breeding. In Java Edition, cacti provide the highest smelting XP of any farmable block. A cactus can also be placed in a flower pot, where it becomes harmless. In Minicraft, cacti are a common tile in sand biomes, obtainable by attacking and used to damage mobs and grow more cacti.
