A campfire is a versatile block in Minecraft that can be used for cooking food, pacifying bees, acting as a non-spreading light source, emitting smoke signals, or functioning as a damaging trap. A regular campfire emits a light level of 15, while a soul campfire emits a light level of 10 and has turquoise flames, dealing more damage. Campfires can be mined with any tool or by hand, but axes are the most efficient. A regular campfire drops 2 or 4 charcoal, while a soul campfire drops soul soil. If mined with a tool enchanted with Silk Touch, the campfire drops itself as an item. Campfires are lit by default when placed, and they can be manually lit using flint and steel, fire charges, etc., or extinguished with water, splash water bottles, or shovels. Campfires can cook up to four food items simultaneously without fuel, but the cooking time is slower. If a hay bale is placed below the campfire, smoke will rise higher, creating a signal fire. Campfires also damage entities standing on top of them but do not cause lasting burning. Soul campfires repel piglins, but not piglin brutes.
