In Minecraft, chains are decorative metallic blocks that were first introduced in the Nether Update. Chains can be crafted at a crafting table using 1 iron ingot and 2 iron nuggets. They are primarily used for decoration and can be used to suspend bells, hanging signs, and lanterns (both regular and soul lanterns). Chains do not require a supporting block, can exist freely in mid-air, and can be rotated. Chains can connect horizontally or vertically, but not across different orientations. Players can walk over horizontal chains placed one block above a surface, but horizontal chains two blocks above a surface will prevent players from passing through. Chains can be pushed by pistons without being broken. Chains also generate naturally in bastion remnants and some ruined portals in the Nether, typically above magma blocks. In mineshafts, chains generate on the sides of wooden bridges when the distance between the bridge and the highest solid block below it is greater than the distance to the lowest solid block above it, forming a vertical pillar. Chains can be mined using any pickaxe, but will drop nothing if mined without one. The IDs and block states for chains vary between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Although mainly used for decoration, they have some unique functions, such as not being broken by pistons and being able to be attached to bells and lanterns. The chain is a versatile block in Minecraft that can be used for building, decoration, and some special purposes.
