Coarse dirt is a special type of block in Minecraft that, unlike regular dirt, cannot have grass, mycelium, or podzol grow on its surface. Coarse dirt can be obtained through crafting or found in specific biomes. To craft it, place two dirt blocks and two gravel blocks in a crafting table. You can also mine coarse dirt with any tool or by hand, but a shovel is the fastest. This block is commonly found in biomes such as mega taigas, mesas, and savannas. It also generates in mushroom farm rooms in woodland mansions and trail ruins. The primary uses for coarse dirt include planting saplings, sugar cane, mushrooms, bamboo, and sweet berries. It does not allow grass or mycelium to spread, making it useful for landscaping or building structures that you don't want covered in plants. Furthermore, coarse dirt can be tilled into regular dirt using a hoe, and then into farmland. Alternatively, a shovel can turn coarse dirt into a dirt path. Using a water bottle converts coarse dirt into mud.
