Crying Obsidian is a special variant of obsidian in Minecraft, first added in version 1.16. Its main difference from regular obsidian is its appearance: Crying Obsidian emits a purple glow and purple particles that drip from its surface, as if it were crying. It cannot be used to create Nether portals, but it is used to craft respawn anchors, which allow players to set their respawn point in the Nether. Crying Obsidian cannot be crafted, and players typically find it in ruined portals or in chests within bastion remnants, or by bartering with piglins. Players can mine Crying Obsidian with a diamond or netherite pickaxe. Crying Obsidian has high blast resistance and can be an effective material for defensive constructions. It has a light level of 10, but it doesn't melt ice or snow. Crying obsidian was initially considered for setting spawn points but was later replaced by beds. Nevertheless, it remains a unique and useful block in Minecraft, especially during Nether explorations.
