Glow Lichen is a non-solid, light-emitting block in Minecraft, added in the 1.17 Caves & Cliffs update. It resembles glowing vines and provides light, serving as a common decorative block. Glow lichen naturally generates on the surfaces of stone, andesite, diorite, granite, calcite, tuff, deepslate, and dripstone blocks within caves, and can also be found underwater, but does not generate in the deep dark biome. It cannot be crafted using a crafting table or furnace, and must be harvested with shears. Glow lichen emits a light level of 7, similar to a redstone torch. Using bone meal can cause it to spread to adjacent blocks, but not backwards. Multiple glow lichens can be placed on different surfaces of the same block. Besides being a light source, glow lichen can be used as a compost material, having a 50% chance to raise the compost level by 1. In Survival mode, players typically explore caves, harvest the glow lichen with shears, or use bone meal to encourage growth and then harvest. Glow lichen is also available in the Creative mode inventory. Overall, glow lichen is a both practical and visually appealing decorative block, adding brightness and exploration fun to Minecraft's cave world.
