In Minecraft, a Hay Bale is a flammable, decorative block added in version 1.6.1. It is crafted from nine pieces of wheat and is often used to decorate farm-related structures, such as stables and barns. Hay bales can also be used to breed llamas and feed horses. When placed, hay bales orient themselves based on the player's position relative to the block, similar to wood blocks. They are commonly found scattered around in plains villages, and less frequently in savanna and desert villages. Hay bales can also generate under some campfires in taiga villages, or as part of targets/scarecrows in pillager outposts. Although players cannot eat hay bales directly, they can be used to heal horses, donkeys, and mules by 10 health points and also accelerate the growth of baby horses. Hay bales reduce fall damage by 80%. Placing a hay bale under a campfire increases the height of its smoke, making it a signal fire. A hay bale placed under a note block produces a banjo sound. Furthermore, hay bales are used to craft target blocks and emit a redstone signal when struck by an arrow. Hay bales are a compact way to store wheat; a full stack of 64 can be converted into 192 loaves of bread. They can also be used for composting, although not very efficiently.
