An impulse command block is a special block in Minecraft primarily used for executing game commands. It cannot be obtained or edited through normal means in Survival mode, so it's mainly used on multiplayer servers, in Creative worlds, and custom maps. The defining feature of an impulse command block is that it executes its command only once when activated. It typically needs to be triggered by redstone circuits or set to “Always Active”. In Java Edition, impulse command blocks can be found in the Creative inventory or obtained through commands like `/give @s minecraft:command_block` or `/setblock ~ ~ ~ command_block`. Similar to other blocks that store NBT data, using the pick block control (usually middle mouse button) + Ctrl copies the commands and options within the command block. Impulse command blocks are non-flammable and have the same blast resistance as bedrock. While non-operator players can place command blocks, the GUI can only be opened by players in Creative mode with appropriate permissions.
